In recent years, driven by continuous innovation and rapid advancements in the medical technology sector, China's implantable medical device market has been steadily expanding, showcasing tremendous growth potential and emerging as a highly sought-after niche segment in the capital markets. Hu Xuyu, Partner at Jifeng Capital, highlighted in his thematic presentation titled "Trends and Investment Insights in China's Minimally Invasive Interventional Implant Industry" that, with the ongoing evolution of domestic medical device technologies, various interventional implant techniques—characterized by their minimally invasive nature, reduced patient discomfort, and shorter hospital stays—are increasingly being adopted by major hospitals. Compared to traditional methods, these interventional devices offer significant advantages and boast highly versatile application scenarios, positioning the entire industry in a phase of robust growth with abundant opportunities across specialized sub-sectors. Notably, in the realm of minimally invasive interventional implants, while cardiovascular intervention concepts have already reached relative maturity, valve intervention procedures are poised to become the next industry breakthrough. Meanwhile, neurointervention is gradually shifting toward high-value products, with companies steadily refining their pipeline strategies. In the peripheral arterial and venous intervention space, although international offerings are already diverse and sophisticated, domestically produced options remain limited, leaving considerable room for development. Once local product portfolios are fully developed, this segment could accelerate its transition toward import substitution. On the other hand, the artificial joint market remains one of the least localized areas within orthopedics, presenting unique challenges such as high R&D barriers, intricate manufacturing processes, stringent regulatory requirements, and mounting pressure from centralized procurement initiatives. To navigate these complexities, manufacturers must adopt tailored strategies that align with both platform-based and specialized business models. Looking ahead, embracing either an integrated platform approach or a focused, expert-driven strategy will likely be key to success for interventional device companies.
During the roundtable discussion, Zhang Zhanwei, Managing Director of Yuanhe Chukun; Hu Xuyu, Partner at Jifeng Capital; Cao Yu, Director of Investments at Eli Lilly Asia Fund; Zhang Ao, Executive Director at Qiming Venture Partners; and Chen Ji, Investment Director at Chende Capital, explored the opportunities and challenges surrounding the domestic substitution of implantable medical devices. They also shared insights from a capital perspective on how companies can best position themselves for growth. In the field of implantable medical devices, a company’s positioning is critical—whether to simply focus on building a profitable business or to pursue a more specialized, platform-based strategy is a key consideration for founders. As investors, we place particular emphasis on a company’s innovation capabilities and its potential to replace existing products. At the same time, it’s essential that companies can effectively translate cutting-edge technologies into solutions tailored to China’s vast community of physicians and patients, turning real clinical needs into tangible, market-ready products. Throughout their journey, businesses must prioritize intellectual property protection, ensuring they have robust plans for product innovation, iteration, and strategic roadmap development. Internally, fostering a strong talent retention strategy through effective incentive mechanisms will help stabilize and enhance team performance, enabling sustained success in an increasingly competitive landscape.
In the inaugural year of the 14th Five-Year Plan, efforts to support the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will be intensified and made more efficient. As a result, the challenges SMEs face in accessing affordable financing—such as difficulties and high costs—will gradually ease and be resolved. During his keynote sharing session titled "Reflections on Financing for Startups," Dr. Ning Yihua, Chairman of Suzhou Jingyu Medical Device Co., Ltd., drew on Jingyu Medical's own growth experience to outline several key principles for startups seeking funding at different stages of development. At the early stages—when the company is just getting started and focusing on engineering prototype R&D—he emphasized prioritizing angel investors and government-backed funds to secure initial capital as well as resources for product development and experimentation. As the company progresses into the animal and clinical trial phases, he recommended partnering with specialized, industry-savvy institutional investors to obtain crucial funding for clinical trials, along with ongoing capital for research, development, and operations. Once regulatory approval and registration are secured, the next step is to continuously attract institutional investment to fuel market expansion, sales activities, operational needs, and reinvestment in R&D. Finally, after the company reaches profitability and achieves financial stability, it’s advisable to bring in renowned institutional investors before preparing for stock reform and an eventual public listing, thereby strengthening the company’s credibility and positioning it favorably for future growth.
During the corporate networking session, Leao Medical, a leading company specializing in innovative high-value medical devices for peripheral vascular interventions and endoscopic treatments of the digestive tract, took the stage as a corporate representative to share its business strategy and growth plans, engaging with the attending investment firms and other companies to exchange insights on enterprise development. Meanwhile, representatives from other participating companies and heads of institutional investors also provided brief overviews of their organizations’ progress and capital-raising needs to the investment community. Following the event, businesses engaged in more in-depth discussions with relevant investors, actively exploring potential collaboration opportunities.
